Understanding Your Child’s Emotions

May 31, 2018 2 min read

Over on Instagramstories I posted our ‘Feeling Faces’ chart that is on our fridge. I had SO many DM’s asking for a copy so I thought I would speak about it here so that it has a permanent place for you to access at any time. After completing the ‘Tuning Into Kids’ course my husband and I have learnt many strategies to help our kids understand their feelings. The ‘Feeling Faces’ chart has been a game changer for our family!

How we use it? ➡ Just after our 4 year old calms down from having a tantrum, we get down to her level and discuss her feelings in that moment using a chart like this. It’s called ‘emotion coaching’ and there’s a whole heap of research that suggests your child will recover from a tantrum a lot quicker and stay calm when they are experiencing strong emotions which builds emotional intelligence. When your child knows you understand their feelings, they are more responsive to your requests. For example: ‘I know your sister is making you feel frustrated right now, maybe you’re a bit angry with her too...?’ Etc.

It’s not about problem solving at all - it’s simply about understanding your child’s emotions. Best part: you only need to practice this 40% of the time to see results!

Does anyone use a chart like this and do you find it’s helping?? Please leave a comment and let us know! Stick a copy on your fridge like we have and encourage your child to use it when they are emotional.
